Is it necessary to include ‘powered by openedX’ logo in the footer of my commercial website? How can I make my implementation completely private?
There are three separate questions here.
First, you can make a commercial site using the Open edX software. Nothing in the licensing prevents you from charging fees for people to use your site. Plenty of people are already doing this.
Second, you do not have to display the Powered by Open edX logo, but we would really appreciate it if you would. We’ve given you something of value, it doesn’t seem like much to ask to reciprocate by crediting us.
Third, the core of the Open edX software is licensed under the AGPL, which requires you to make your changes available under the same license.
All that said, these are legal issues, and I am not a lawyer, so cannot offer legal advice.
