Exciting changes are on the horizon for 2025!
As you may know, we’ve dedicated significant time to evaluating ways to improve the Core Contributor experience. After a lot of collaboration, I’m happy to share the following updates that will roll out in 2025:
- The Launch of an Open edX Handbook
- Empowering the CC Community to Improve the Onboarding Course
- Simplifying Listaflow Sprint Check-ins to Improve Engagement
- Evaluating the Communication Tools We Use and How We Use Them
- Creating a Shortlist of Communication Tools, and Prioritizing Open Source Options
- Improving OSPR Management
- Introducing a Single Responsible Person Principle (for bugs & PRs)
- Evaluating Open edX Partners as Maintainers
- Continuing to Iterate After the Summit: A Governance Working Group
- Using a Kanban Board for the Working Workflow
- Examining Core Contributor Metrics with Biterg.io
- Improving the Review Process by Using CODEOWNERS
- Encouraging Newcomers to Join Working Groups as Part of On-Boarding

What did you accomplish this sprint?
- I explored drf-spectacular and its OpenAPI generated client
- I was involved in some security vulnerability discovery and discussions, plus the Large Instances Working Group PR reviews
- Started designing web notifications for the LMS (as part of this proposal)
- Worked on improving Studio’s 403 message
- Sumac testing and test coordination. 74.4% of tests are done
- Submitted talk proposal for Open edX 2025
- Sumac testing for Aspects
- Reviewed OSPRs edx-ora2#2238 openedx-learning#249, code-annotations#119
- Answered a forum question about (depr) Badgr
- Usual repo maintenance
What do you plan to work on in the upcoming sprint?
- Merge Sumac bugfix backport: [Backport] fix: bypass access checks when populating course blocks cache by asadali145 · Pull Request #35919 · openedx/edx-platform · GitHub
- Planning for xBlock Aside bugs
- This sprint I investigated i18n issues in Superset, with an eye towards submitting a grant proposal to make a major contribution to translate user-provided strings in charts. But since I’ve never contributed to Superset before, I decided that I should start small instead, and build some experience and credibility by fixing some community-reported i18n issues using my CC hours
- Continuing work on the web notifications designs
What went well this sprint?
- Coordination with Andres and Chelsea
- Got a couple of important backports merged
