# 🌳 Help Us Name the "W" and "X" Open edX Releases! 🌳

Hi everyone!
We need your help choosing the names for our upcoming **“W”** and **“X”** [releases](https://openedx.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/COMM/pages/3613392957/Open+edX+release+schedule)! This is a fun way to leave your mark on the Open edX community, and the process is simple:
🟢 **How it works:**
1. Propose a tree name 🌲 for **either the “W” release or the “X” release** (or both!) in the comments below.
2. Add a short description or motivation for your suggestion if you’d like! (Optional but encouraged)
3. Vote for your favorite suggestions by **liking** the comments ❤. You can vote for as many suggestions as you like!
⚠ **Rules:**
- Tree names only! 🌳
- Submit your “W” and “X” name ideas as separate comments to make voting easier.
- Voting is open until **October 15** 📅.
The names with the most votes will be the official names for the **“W”** and **“X”** releases.

For X, I propose… [Xylem](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xylem). It is not a specific tree (sorry). Rather, it is the part of the plant that transports water upwards from the roots, and thus it is an essential part of every tree!
And, importantly, it is easy to spell and pronounce (“ZYE-lem”).

**Walnut** : one of the strongest and most beneficial trees. Tasty fruit (walnut) and long-life hardwood. The spelling is as easy as it sounds, and no double or extra letters

**[Xylosma](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xylosma)**: evergreen tree, sounds suitable for the 24th version. pronounced the same way as _xylophone_, and no double or extra letters

For W, Walnut should be the obvious choice 😃 .
For X, I propose [Xanthium](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xanthium), they initiate flowering when the days are getting shorter in the late summer and fall, typically from July to October so aligning with the potential release time (next October) too 😋 .

For W: I quite like [Willow](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willow), but I think [Walnut](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walnut) is a great choice as well (who doesn’t like a tree that rewards you with edible goodies 🙂 )
For X: [Ximenia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ximenia) has tasty fruit and [Xanthostemon](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xanthostemon) has really pretty flowers

Would this qualify though? I think it’s closer to a weed than a tree, its an annual plant so dies after it’s growth season

I will propose **[Willow](https://friendsofthepublicgarden.org/2018/01/17/meet-the-trees-the-weeping-willow/)** for W! They are fantastically unique-looking trees. The Boston Public Garden has several of them.

Close to Kyle’s suggestion for X, I propose “Xylon” (ξύλον, Greek for “tree”).
For this release, we’d like to embrace the variable and ambiguous nature of the letter X by simply naming the release “tree”. 🙂

Added benefit to picking **Willow** : Willow bark was traditionally used to create medicine to treat headaches - subtext: this release will solve all our Open edX headaches 🤣

Lots of good options here - I think if I had to limit my vote to 1 so far shared…
I’d bump **Willow** up for both the Boston Public Garden + headache relief 🙂 reasons.
I also love **Xylon** being an alias for tree, and Sarina’s note about leaning into the ambiguous nature of X. Such meta. Also its slightly easier to pronounce than some of the other X options so it came out ahead for me. 🙂
