Hello everyone, I am new around here.

I just watched the demo course, and I am fascinated by the kind of things you can do with edX. The university where I work uses Moodle, and I would like to test edX. If it is as good as it seems, I would like to try to install it at my institution. Does anyone know if there is a way to create a test course on edX? I mean, is there a way to emulate edX and create a webpage for my “first edX course” to promote it within my institution?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Hi and welcome!

The easiest thing to do is to check out the Open edX sandbox: [https://sandbox.openedx.org/](https://sandbox.openedx.org/)

The sandbox wipes all data every 7 days, but you can export your course at the end of the week and re-import it the next week. It’s a good opportunity to try out what the Open edX platform has to offer at no cost and minimal effort.

The next thing you could do is install Tutor, [Installing Tutor — Tutor documentation](https://docs.tutor.edly.io/install.html), either in local development mode or in a small production mode.

Finally, you could reach out to an Open edX provider and obtain their help: [Open edX platform installation and hosting - Open edX](https://openedx.org/marketplace-category/open-edx-installation-and-hosting/)

Also a word on nomenclature - “edX” only refers to one thing, the website, [edx.org](http://edx.org). “Open edX” refers to the Open Source platform that runs all Open edX courses across hundreds of websites, and the Open edX community - you’re interacting with the Open edX community on the Open edX forums right now. It’s a little confusing, but I thought I’d clarify a bit since you used both terms. Let me know if you have any questions 🙂

just one thing, the Open edX sandbox didn’t let me create a course. Apparently I need some kind of permission.

Interesting. @Eden_Huthmacher @ehuthmacher does the new sandbox allow testing course authoring? @Misterix above wasn’t able to test out authoring.

@sarina @Misterix Yes, it should allow you to test the course authoring side. @abstract-technology @Nicole_Kessler could you kindly assist?

Dear @Misterix,

welcome to the Open edX community.

The [Open edX sandbox](https://sandbox.openedx.org/) allows users to register and authenticate their account and to explore the authoring tool and create courses from an author’s perspective. Here’s how to get started:

1. **Register for free** and authenticate your email address.
2. **Log in** to [https://sandbox.openedx.org/](https://sandbox.openedx.org/), then click on the **“Studio”** button in the header navigation bar. This will open a new page, taking you directly into the authoring tool.

Voilà! You can now experiment with the platform and start creating courses.

Thanks a lot @sarina , ehuthmacher and @abstract-technology !
Yesterday I completed all these stages but after filling all the fields and clicking “Create”, I obtained a message below in the webpage telling me I needed permissions to create a course.
Today I think I did all the same and the course was created, so maybe I did something wrong yesterday. Thanks again for your help.
