Content Disappearing from LMS Course Outlines

We’re experiencing an issue where content is randomly disappearing from our LMS course outlines. This problem is affecting both Studio-authored and Git-authored (these courses are developed using XML via Git repository) courses.

@pdpinch please add anything I may have missed

• Symptoms:
  • Content randomly goes missing for both staff/admin and students
  • Usually affects the same content each time and so far its always been at the bottom of Studio (see images below for example)
  • Missing content is still accessible with direct links from Studio
• Attempts to reproduce:
  • Unable to reproduce in a controlled environment
• Potential leads:
  • Possible relation to course cache updates
• Current workaround:
  • Publishing dummy content (eg section+subsection+unit) in Studio refreshes the outline, we then delete dummy content
• Additional observations:
  • Affects both released and unreleased content (for learners not seeing unreleased content is as expected but course admins should be able to see all content)

Course staff should see past Problem Set 7

Any insights on where to look for root cause (or to even reproduce issue) would be appreciated

Hmm, is this the same problem as Course Block Cache Resulting in Inconsistent Course Outline, Progress Page, and Instructor Reports perhaps?

I hadn’t thought so. As far as I know, the caching of problems for calculating grades is independent from the caching of the course outline. If there’s a connection that we’re unaware of, I’d love to know.

For what it’s worth, these two problems are manifesting in different deployments of open edX.
