Relocating Special Exams Settings into a Dedicated Special Exams Page

:backhand_index_pointing_right: For the full context of the overall project to migrate all Advanced Settings into more suitable locations, see https://openedx.atlassian.net/wiki/x/AwAjOAE

Overview

This project proposes migrating all Special Exams–related configurations (e.g., timed exams, proctoring) from the Studio Advanced Settings page into a new Special Exams page under Pages & Resources. This will unify exam-specific settings in a dedicated interface.

Problem

Special Exams settings are currently scattered, with some hidden in Advanced Settings and others partially exposed elsewhere. This fragmentation makes it difficult for course authors to configure exam policies, increasing setup time and the likelihood of misconfiguration.

Use Cases

  • As a course author, I need to manage all Special Exam settings in one place so I can configure timed and proctored exams without confusion.

  • As an instructor, I need a dedicated Special Exams page to quickly set up and adjust exam requirements in order to ensure consistency across assessments.

Supporting Data

Schema’s analysis identified 5 settings in Advanced Settings related to Special Exams:

  1. Proctoring provider

  2. Enable timed exams

  3. Enable proctored exams

  4. Create zendesk tickets for suspicious proctored exam attempts

  5. Allow opting out of proctored exams

Relocating them to a new Special Exams page will:

  • Centralize all timed and proctoring settings in one dedicated interface.

  • Reduce errors caused by fragmented configuration options.

  • Align with ongoing improvements in the authoring experience by expanding Pages & Resources with specialized tools.
