tCRIL Funded Contribution: General Accessibility Projects

Hello everyone! tCRIL is pleased to announce a new contribution project to help advance the Open edX platform. This project aims to improve accessibility (a11y) process and documentation within the Open edX ecosystem.

We are seeking proposals from existing community members as well as qualified organizations looking for a first project to join the community. All proposals from providers interested in undertaking this work must be submitted by April 18th, 2023 and tCRIL expects to choose a provider by April 25th, 2023.

The Open edX project currently aims to conform to WCAG 2.1 at a Level AA compliance, and will soon be looking to conform to the yet-to-be-released WCAG 2.2 standard. The Open edX community has historically lacked an a11y specialist; the work that such a specialist will tackle includes advising the Product Working Group on how best to incorporate a11y into product review of pull requests, performing an a11y audit of various features of the Open edX platform, and (time allowing) producing documentation to help all of us coders level up our a11y coding skills.

We’ll be looking for proposals that have a strong understanding of WCAG 2.1/2.2 standards and how to code accessible software. Price, timeline, and a proven ability to work with the Open edX code base will also be important factors in our decision.

Details on the selection and project status, as well as a draft Statement of Work explaining the proposed project in more detail, are located at FC-0017 General Accessibility Projects. The draft Statement of Work can (and will) be amended as conversations with the providers unfold but should be considered the most authoritative source of what we are looking for from these proposals.

Please send all proposals to funded-contributions@tcril.org and cc myself at sarina at tcril.org . Feel free to contact me with any questions on Slack at @sarina or comment here.

We are looking forward to your questions and proposals!
