How to enable course enrolment emails?

Our installation correctly sends emails when creating an account, resetting your password, etc. We would like to have course enrolment emails, so that anyone enrolling in a course gets a confirmation email.

From this SO question I gather that there is or were email templates, which could be enabled as such. However, from another post on this forum (/how-to-change-edx-logo-and-sign-in-link-in-password-reset-email/172*) I understand the email templates system has changed. Also these instructions on seem to indicate it’s necessary to hack around and get an external service to send the emails.

So I’m wondering: are there still email templates that we could activate from within Open EdX, or do we need to go the McQuillen route?
