We recently deployed Open edX Sumac.2 using Tutor v19.0.2 in a production environment and enabled Spanish (Latin America) (es_419) as one of the supported languages for our client’s LMS.
Before enabling the language, we checked the Transifex project and found that the CMS/Studio component for es_419 was translated up to 94.34%, with only 30 untranslated strings remaining. Based on this, we expected the translation coverage to be nearly complete and usable for a production environment.
However, after enabling es_419 in our platform, we were disappointed to find that more than 500 strings were still not translated. This discrepancy is quite frustrating. The difference between what is shown in Transifex and what appears in the actual LMS/CMS makes the translation feature feel unreliable and misleading.
For instance, in the frontend-app-authoring
repository, many messages remain untranslated. This is just one example—there are numerous other strings across the platform that are missing proper translations.
As a service provider, it’s difficult to promise proper multilingual support to clients when the actual experience doesn’t match the reported progress. We were expecting near-complete support for this locale, but the current state is far from usable.
We’d like to understand:
- Why is there such a large gap between the translation progress shown in Transifex and what’s reflected in the platform?
- Are there known issues syncing the translations from Transifex to the Open edX release builds?
We really appreciate the efforts of the community and translation contributors, but this issue has negatively impacted our project timeline and client confidence.
