🌳 Help Us Name the Next Open edX Releases! 🌳

Hi everyone!

We need your help choosing the names for our upcoming “U” and “V” releases! This is a fun way to leave your mark on the Open edX community, and the process is simple:

:green_circle: How it works:

  1. Propose a tree name :evergreen_tree: for either the “U” release or the “V” release (or both!) in the comments below.
  2. Add a short description or motivation for your suggestion if you’d like! (optional but encouraged)
  3. Vote for your favorite suggestions by liking the comments. You can vote for as many suggestions as you like!

:warning: Rules:

  • Tree names only! :deciduous_tree:
  • Submit your “U” and “V” name ideas as separate comments to make voting easier.
  • Voting stays open until November 1st :date:

The names with the most votes will be the official names for the “U” and “V” releases. :tada:

Let’s make these releases memorable—get your suggestions in and vote! :raised_hands:

Ulm (Ulmus is the scientific name for elm trees)

Viburnum No reason but, this is interesting:

The leaves, bark and berries are all POISONOUS to man

Ninja’d.

Viburnum - Wikipedia is going to be the only thing that comes up for V, which I don’t love as it’s a lot of letters and maybe easy to misspell (I keep wanting to write “vibranium”), plus, is like kind of a tree at best. The only other “v” things I’m finding are flowers - vanilla, violet, verbena.

I propose Ulmo, the south american bee tree whose honey can symbolise collaboration.

There is at least one other tree for V: Vitex

I wanted to change my vote from Viburnum to Vitex, but it turns out you can’t un-like a post. So I have voted for 2 “V” names, sorry! You can ignore my Viburnum vote.

(@jalondonot , it is your discretion, but I recommend removing that rule that we can only vote once. When each person can vote for only one item, the votes end up being split, and so the winner is not always what people want. Instead, if everyone can vote as many times as they want, then the winner will naturally be the most popular name.)

Thanks for the suggestion, @kmccormick. It makes sense to me and I’ve already edited the original post to include your feedback.

Isn’t there Valencia?
V: Valencia

for the U – ULMUS
I suggest the Latin name of the ELM, which is Ulmus, very common in Italy too

for the V – Viburnum which is a pretty common tree

For the U: “Ugni”
Description: Ugni, an evergreen tree known for its aromatic berries, symbolizes the sophistication and attention to detail that will characterize the new update.

For the V: “Vachellia”
Description: Vachellia, a genus of thorny trees, represents resilience and protection. This release aims to safeguard users while delivering powerful features, embodying the tree’s strong defensive traits.

For V I’d like to suggest Velvetseed.

A little information from the wiki page:

Guettarda is a plant genus in the family Rubiaceae. Most of these plants are known by the common name velvetseed .

Most of the species are Neotropical.[2] Twenty are found in New Caledonia and one reaches Australia.[3] A few others are found on islands and in coastal areas of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It is a tree of coastal habitats, up to 18 m (59 ft) in height.

Vitex and Ulumus, short names

Umbellularia, commonly known as the California bay laurel, is an evergreen tree native to the western United States. Known for its fragrant leaves and resilience in diverse environments, it symbolizes strength, adaptability, and longevity.

Verawood is a tropical hardwood tree prized for its durability, strength, and resistance to wear.

Folks, remember to put your U and V suggestions in separate posts so we can vote for them separately.

I like Verawood very much. Umbellularia, not so much. @Peter_Kulko, can you make Verawood a separate post so we can vote on it specifically?

Great! Created a separate topic :raised_hands:

I know it’s a bit early, but I’d like to start lobbying for the ‘W’ release to be named Willow (after the willow tree). Historically, the willow is a symbol of Ukraine and is often used as a symbol and metaphor in many pieces of folk and historical literature. This would make Willow a deeply meaningful name for the ‘W’ release."
